India braces for impact of 50% U.S. tariffs from today

The United States government is getting ready to implement the 25% additional tariffs imposed on India by U.S. President Donald Trump, which come into effect on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) uploaded a notification of the new tariffs to be published in the official register the following day.

SC asks why judiciary can't review inaction of Governors on Bills

If courts can review a Governor's recommendation for President's Rule, why cannot the judiciary examine a Governor for sitting on crucial State Bills for years together, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, heading a Presidential Reference Bench, asked the Centre and BJP-ruled States on Tuesday.

Govt. unveils ₹200-cr. draft start-up policy for public feedback

The Delhi government released a draft of the Delhi Startup Policy, 2025, on Tuesday, aiming to transform the national capital into a global innovation hub and facilitate the establishment of at least 5,000 ventures by 2035.

'Developed Rajasthan-2047': CM calls for collective efforts

Ahead of the Monsoon Session of the Rajasthan Assembly starting on September 1, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has called for "collective efforts" to achieve the goals under the "Developed Rajasthan-2047" programme. Mr. Sharma held marathon meetings with BJP MPs, MLAs and office-bearers of the party at his official residence in Jaipur over two days.

Election to Assam's Bodoland Territorial Council on Sept. 22

The election to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will be held on September 22, the Assam State Election Commission announced on Tuesday. A statement issued by the commission said September 26 has been scheduled for the counting of votes across the 40 constituencies of the council. Of these constituencies, 30 are reserved for the Scheduled Tribes and five for the non-Scheduled Tribes. The remaining seats belong to the open category. The commission stated that the BTR has 26,57,937 voters, an increase of 11.35% over the number of electors during the 2020 election.

The gender angle to India's economic vulnerabilities

India's economic ascent, which is now valued at $4.19 trillion, has earned it a firm place in the global growth story. The country is poised to become the world's third-largest economy. Yet, this momentum now faces a formidable disruption – the proposed 50% tariffs by the United States President Donald Trump on Indian exports. Targeting $40 billion in trade, these tariffs could shave off nearly 1% from India's GDP striking labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, gems, and leather and footwear which are critical industries that disproportionately employ women.

The National Cooperative Policy, 2025, unveiled by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in July, has provoked a sharp response from Kerala, which has a rich tradition of incubating and sustaining cooperatives. Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government created the Ministry of Cooperation under Mr. Shah in 2021, Kerala has been wary of what it describes as unwarranted and unconsti-tutional incursions into State territory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his warm greetings on Ukraine's Independence Day, and said Kyiv was counting on "India's contribution to ending the war with Russia".

Can't judiciary review Governors' inaction: SC

The Supreme Court, in its judgment in S.R. Bommai case (1994), had held that the proclamation of President's Rule could be reviewed by courts to ensure it was not motivated by mala fide reasons.

The Presidential Reference was triggered by an April 8 judgment of a two-judge Bench of the Supreme Court in a petition filed by Tamil Nadu against its Governor, who had been sitting on Bills since 2020. The judgment had prescribed threemonth deadlines for the President and Governors to decide on State Bills.

Govt. schools account for 55.9% of total enrolments, says survey

66% of students are in public institutions in rural areas as against 30.1% in urban; private unaided schools account for 31.9% of enrolment; nearly a third of all students get private coaching, says study undertaken as part of National Sample Survey

Students enrolled in private or non-government schools across India end up paying nearly nine times more in school fees than those enrolled in government schools.

Adi Karmayogi initiative to put tribal 'change leaders' through their paces at village level

Lighting candles, roleplay, cognitive group tasks, and "knottying" and "fishbowl" exercises at the core of efforts to create a "cadre" of 20 lakh "change leaders" for tribal villages under the Adi Karmayogi initiative of the Tribal Affairs Ministry is a training programme that conducts such activities for State, district, and block officials.

Centre finalises National Designated Authority to kick-start carbon markets

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has announced a National Designated Authority (NDA), a mandatory requirement under the provisions of the 2015 Paris Agreement, to enable a carbon emissions trading regime.


13.

Centre cuts wheat stock limits to 'manage food security'

The Union Food Ministry further reduced wheat stock limits for traders, stockists and processors and said the measure was to manage "overall food security and prevent hoarding and unscrupulous speculation." The Centre, however, said there was ample availability of wheat in the country and in 2024-25, wheat output was 1175.07 lakh metric tonne.
